Beyond
the Lab Concept:
MoKS Access Media Lab is
a project frame for developing a range of models for artistic
production and education using digital media. The project
is based on an approach of combining artistic and cultural
development with current computer and communications technologies. MoKS
Access Media Lab is directed toward providing access
to current technology in the localized setting of rural
Mooste for creative use by people from various disciplines
(arts, architecture, education, sciences etc…). The
lab is an open environment for artistic practice, research
and education for the local community, national and international
visitors. The infrastructure for this project will be primarily
sustained through state and local funding. International
support will be used for the initial development phase
and special projects with invited artists and partner organizations.
Purpose:
MoKS Access Media Lab is
a program and facility extension of MoKS : Center for
Art and Social Practice. For the MoKS artist-in-residence
center, the creation of accessible multimedia facilities aims
to take advantage of the continuing development of electronic
media and communications and its impact on the fields of art
and culture. For this program, taking full advantage of computers
and networked communications, is an expression of their versatility
and use as practical and creative tools. This understanding
will also be applied to the multifunctional demands of the MoKS
Access Media Lab space and program itself. It will be
a base for building connections from the localized area of
rural Mooste to the artistic community and art education institutions
of Estonia. The MoKS Access Media Lab program and
purpose will be developed through concentrated activities in
the following areas: |
- Electronic
media access space for visiting artists: the artist residency
center does not focus on any special media. The addition of a
digital media facility would allow MoKS to offer the full range
of artistic capabilities, traditional through new media. One
to two artists specializing in new media would be invited for
the residency each year. The facilities of the media lab will
also be available on a reservation basis for Estonian artists
(for projects, video productions, documentation, etc.).
- Educational and project space for digital media: the media lab would
offer possibilities for expanded public events. Educational programs
would be targeted toward specialized purposes such as workshops (digital
audio/video production, digital imaging, web design, DVD authoring)
for small groups.
- Facility for documentation and post-production: the media lab would
be a facility for production and promotion of MoKS events (website,
digital prepress). The lab would also serve for post-production and
storage of the MoKS digital archive of events and visiting artists
(MoKS website, videos, recordings, photos, etc.).
- Program space for lectures and presentations: artists or other visitors
to Mooste could use the Mooste Access Media Lab for preparation and
presentation of their projects. The lab as a mobile unit would allow
the same projects to travel be shown in other parts of Estonia (nearby
Tartu or Tallinn) or internationally (Latvia or Finland).
