OSALEJAD / PARTICIPANTS ::::
MIKS? / WHY? :::::
murmur (Patrick McGinley) - Ternal
ternal seeks to draw attention to the intricacies and interactive relationships of private/public, internal/external, personal/common space and experience.

in the center of the MoKS basement is a dimly glowing tent. at 4 compass points at the extremities of the space are 4 resonant containers (bottles, bowls, tubes…), each containing a small microphone. somewhere in the space there is also a pair of speakers.

inside the tent (which provides the only light) is a warm and comfortable arrangement of cushions, blankets and objects, inviting a curious participant in. there is a small contact mic’ed tray/table/platform containing an array of small found objects (rocks/leaves/metal). there is also a pair of headphones.
a participant in the space outside the tent will see the space lit by the light from within. the participant will also, if there is another participant inside the tent, hear the sounds being created by the found objects, which are captured and amplified into the space through the speakers.

a participant inside the tent will be invited to manipulate the objects before them, and to put on the headphones, through which they can hear the ambient sound of the larger space resonating in the 4 containers at the compass points (voices, footsteps, perhaps there are leaves on the floor?). the sounds they themselves are creating with the objects may also be captured by these containers to find their way back into the tent.

rather than being a self-sufficient sound installation, ternal is a type of self-generating performance that requires a curious participant. without one, nothing happens…

PATRICK MCGINLEY (murmur) (UK)

Ajalugu:

Patricku sooloplaadid on ilmunud selliste väljaandjate all nagu: ground fault (US), bake records (Holland), s´agita recordings (Itaalia), absurd (Kreeka).

Patrick McGinley (born 1975) is an american born musician and theatre artist who has lived and worked in europe since 1996. from august 1996 until september 1998 he lived in paris, where he studied theatre and began his sound experiments in the context of those studies. moving to london in november of 1998, he began a collection of found sounds and field recordings that would become the basis of all his work. soon after, he began creating compositions with the minimal technical set-up of an analogue 4-track and 3 guitar effects pedals. he has composed works for several theatre performances, including the works of his own company, as well as performing live soundworks for others. his work concentrates on the framing of sounds from our environment which normally pass through our ears unnoticed and unremarked, but which out of context become unrecognisable, alien and extraordinary: crackling charcoal, a squeaking escalator, a buzzing insect, or one’s own breath.

current projects:
patrick’s fourth cd as murmer was released earlier this year by the american record label ground fault. This follows releases for bake records (netherlands), s’agita recordings (italy), and absurd (greece). he is also currently working with multiple performance companies for upcoming productions, and has spent much of the last year touring a recent work with the parisian company urba in france, england, and denmark. He is a co-founder and chairman of framework, an organisation that produces a weekly radio show on london’s resonance104.4fm and organises and promotes live events for artists working in the realm of field recording and phonography. he is constantly developing new material, solo and in collaboration with other sound, visual and performance artists including rotozaza, urba, jonathan coleclough and michael northam.
